A work queue is both the logical and physical staging area for
beginning an activity in a process. In its physical form, the
work queue is the physical inventory of inputs to an activity.
In its logical form, the work queue is the input to an activity,
represented by attributes such as the following:
- Volume of arrival
of new work to the queue
- Speed of processing into
the queue
- Size of the queue
- Waste (for example, from spoilage)
in queue

Measurements of the
work queue are important in process management because they indicate
conditions of any particular activity level in the process. They
can be especially valuable when trying to:
a) troubleshoot a problem in production, or
b) focus on key areas for improvement in a process
