Selecting Processes for Improvement
Sponsored by

This is a rational approach to prioritizing business processes to be improved. In the best case, process improvement selection should be:

  • Systematic – performed in the same way, applying the same criteria, every time
  • Objective – applying unbiased, consensus-based criteria
  • Prioritized – ranking processes according to criteria that are determined to be most important (because they create higher value, prevent the organization from failing, etc.)

While there are many criteria for evaluating and selecting processes, two of the more prominent are:

  • the overall cost to operate, figured by methods such as activity-based costing, and
  • the degree of differentiation provided

Once a process is selected for improvement, the process should be thoroughly reviewed and analyzed. A process walkthrough ensures that things work as they were designed to.
