A rules engine provides the automation environment for the management
of an organization’s business
rules. Its functions include
the following:
- Capture, document and distribute rules to both business
and IT users
- Provide support for using an organization’s
unique business vocabulary
- Translate business rules from a format
understood by stakeholders to a format that can be used by
IT applications
- Provide interfaces for IT applications that require
the use of business rules
- Identify, record, and track the resolution
of any conflicting business rules
- Incorporate a change-management
facility so that business rule changes occurs only after
the appropriate level of analysis and
approvals has taken place

In a process driven organization, a rules engine is one part
of a business process
execution engine which is itself a key
component of a BPM Platform.
