A process benchmark is a measurement
of performance in comparison
to similar processes that are regarded as best
practices, with
the goal of emulating and achieving similar performance. Benchmarking
can spur innovation and provide renewed focus on areas in need
of improvement and provide a target of excellence to pursue.
There are four generic types of process benchmarks:
- Internal
- Competitive
- World-class operations
- Activity-type
Internal benchmarks look inside an organization to see if there
are improvements to be observed from other locations and groups.
|
Competitive (or external)
benchmarks look outside the organization to see what can be observed
and learned from processes at other companies in the same industry.
World-class benchmarks extend the external observation to companies
in other industries that are considered to be the best in the
world at what they do.
Activity type benchmarks focus on a narrow part or piece of
a process, again transcending industries searching for new approaches
or solutions. |
