Legacy applications are IT systems currently used by an organization
in order to implement all or part of a business process. The
term typically applies to mainframe or other host based systems
although it’s really technology agnostic.
Legacy systems are usually very reliable, but fall short in
terms of flexibility, agility, and transparency. They are typically
poorly documented, understood by relatively few people in the
organization, and are difficult to change.

Many legacy systems contain the implementation of key process
models and business rules. This means the business processes
themselves are difficult to change.
Organizations are overcoming some of the problems with legacy
systems by using enterprise
application integration to tie these
legacy systems into a BPM
Platform. This is one approach towards
achieving process liberation.
