A hand-off is the transference of responsibility for an activity from one person or automation to another. Multiple hand-offs
can often increase the elapsed time for a process to complete.
Processes are typically comprised of the following three types
of time:
- work time (or value added time)
- transit time
- wait time or latency

It is not unusual
to find that the majority of a process’s total elapsed
time is non-value added time. A general rule to correct this
is to eliminate as many hand-offs as reasonably possible to reduce
transit and wait time.
