A cross-organizational business process is one that flows across
several organizations or strategic business units. Like cross-functional
processes, rarely is a single individual ultimately responsible
for such an entire process.
Cross-organizational processes have become far more common since
the 1990s, with the advent of business and technology principles
of Enterprise Requirements Planning (ERP) and Supply Chains.

Improved communications
(provided by the Internet and secure, distributed transaction
processing) and application integration (provided by EAI software)
have enabled information technologies to support cross-organizational
processes in a more reliable, cost-effective manner.
