A business analyst takes a process design and process documentation and translates the information into the basic components required to develop a successful, supporting information technology system. This translation is often done through a standard form of documentation called UML.

Business analysts interact heavily with line of business staff, on one hand, and with technical systems developers and process designers on the other hand. They work with a process designer and other subject matter experts to understand the business process. They then develop specifications for the information technology teams and work with them on the implementation and verification of new systems.

 

With the emergence of business process management platforms, a process driven organization is finding the role of the business analyst has both evolved and become much more important because these tools allow the analyst to quickly modify business processes.
