Business process monitoring is the observation and checking
done to measure the satisfactory performance of a business process.
Satisfactory performance is determined during process
modeling and often stems from the results of process
benchmarking.
Organizations employing a BPM Platform are able to monitor individual
process instances in real-time with the support of a business
process execution engine. This is part of the function of Business
Activity Monitoring and it is valuable in that quick intervention
can be made if any process instance is not performing to expectations.

In addition, processes
can be monitored over a long periods of time to see how they
perform over several process instances. When actual results are
compared to targets, the gap between the two becomes data that
process owners and other stakeholders use to take corrective
action. Process monitoring requires not just performance
measurement,
but feedback systems that enable the measurement data to reach
the stakeholders.
